Wednesday 18th March – walk **** - Geneva – sunny periods and breezy
morning.
Two things made up our mind not to ski at Mijoux, firstly it was windy in
the night and secondly the lower lift was not open due to poor snow so I
made a plan in my head but did not tell Mag so the day turned into a
mystery tour:) Had a good night in the van feeling really cosy under two
duvets, had a relaxing start. I dozed while Mag read, then Mag made
porridge while I packed the picnic and we left Mijoux around 9.30 and
headed to the Col de Faucille in nice sunshine with a few clouds whizzing
past! The sight that greeted us was amazing, the whole of the Apls in front
of us was covered in cloud except for the impressive Mont Blanc, we had to
stop and take some pics! I then followed the signs to Geneva which slightly
worried Mag as she was not sure we could drive in Switzerland, but you only
need a permit to drive on the motorways so we were fine. It is a little
hectic driving through towns and when we reached Geneva that was pretty
busy but we soon spotted a sign for the Lac and quickly found a free
three-hour parking space right near the water about a mile and a half from
the centre. By this time, it had clouded over and I was beginning to regret
putting my shorts on, there was a good breeze blowing down the Lac and we
spotted a parawinger and a couple of windsurfers out! It is a lovely
promenade to wonder along; there were loads of super fit joggers out as
well as many electric bikes and scooters whizzing past in the cycle lane!
We quickly spotted all the local birdlife including grebes, swans. coots,
geese, goosanders, ruffed ducks, red crested pochard and muscovys:) The
beach side buildings are large and impressive, we love the lines of
pollarded trees too, there are small beaches and we even spotted a few
people braving a dip! We passed the marina; water taxis were constantly on
the move and the paddle steamers looked good; we walked out the long
breakwater where the huge famous fountain is but sadly it was not switched
on! We crossed the long road bridge covered in big flags but that was weird
as it moved as the cars crossed! We returned just down river on an older
bridge and made a small detour into the town centre to see how the other
half lived with its many high-end shops with well-dressed bouncers on the
door to keep the riff raff like us out! There were some impressive
chocolate and cake shops filled with things we probably could not afford so
returned to the Lac side just in time for the wind to drop and the sun
return and as if by magic the fountain was turned on! We headed out onto
the breakwater for a closer look and got soaked which was such a laugh! We
made it back to the van as our parking time was up so drove a mile down the
road to stop for our picnic lunch right by the Lac, just lovely and we have
only walked 4 easy miles today! I then told Mag to type Le Chevrerie into
her phone, another surprise for her and a nice young lady directed us to
one of our favourite ski spots which took about an hour of climbing
mountain roads, really popular with cyclists too! We got our spot on the
outskirts of the town at the end of the small Lac with the little chapel
across the water but sadly they have somewhat spoiled the view by building
a small but very ugly sub-station! Mag made yummy carbonara while I played
cards as the sun set behind then some but some numpty parked beside us in
the dark but we hope to go skiing tomorrow so it wont bother us, some
rain/snow forecast for Sunday so not sure how to spend the weekend?
